XML and mySQL

Newer versions of mySQL have some nice inherent XML handling routines. However, my host does not run a newer version. Does anyone here use XML with mySQL, inserting native XML and extracting its content? If so, how do you handle it and are there any standard routines available to do this? Any help appreciated.
