I remember when I started SEOing a while back getting listed in DMOZ was considered a must for respectability of your website in google's eyes. Anyone think this is still the case? It seems google is taking many more things into consideration these days.
But most importantly you need to have good content , otherwise even if u advertise in 100 directories you will not get a sign-up in ur forum/website/etc.
Yes, you are right and there were very many free directories have come up these days which are of good and decent quality and google has started considering them too as credible source and hence it is not recommended very much to get listed in dmoz these days.
