I wonder which is the best way to get good backlinks and thus google juice and approved by google, is it free directories or paid directories. I have been avoiding paid directories due to the fact that many free directories have approved my links and i am hesitant to pay for getting listed when it can be done for free. Advice me on this.

Paid directories are more effective cuz they put your links on High PR at the top of the page and its visible to every one where as in free directories,your link will be on Low PR and its on side or way down on the page.

I'd say a link is a link. It depends on the quality of the directory, thats what you should be looking at. A selective free directory is better then a paid directory accepting every link for 5 dollars.

Submit to both quality free and paid directories, both will give you the necessary benefit in the long run.

I would mostly go for paid directories only, as they charge money to keep the directory clean and only for maintenance cost and hence i feel that paid directories are far best than free directories.

If you have budget then go for paid one and also make sure you submitted your site to DMOZ (free).
